Sam, Janet, Paul and Baby Raymond

01Sam, Janet, Paul, and baby Raymond entered the shelter with their parents, Betty and Howard, who lost their jobs within six months of each other. Janet had recently joined the family after her aunt Betty received full custody of her. While in the shelter, the older kids helped their parents take care of the younger kids. The kids participated in summer activities while their parents went to job training programs. The family moved into their own apartment in South St. Paul after Betty and Howard found employment.

Shannon and her two kids

02Shannon and her two kids came to Families Moving Forward after she lost her job and then was evicted from their apartment in south Minneapolis. While Shannon stayed at FMF she received assistance in finding a new job and housing. Shannon's kids stayed at their same school throughout their stay. She and her family moved into their own apartment in Bloomington after being with FMF for 54 days.

Danielle, Boyfriend and Two Kids

03Danielle entered Families Moving Forward with her boyfriend and their two kids. Danielle was worried about how being in a shelter would affect her two year-old son. She read to him every day. Danielle also utilized the FMF parenting classes to help her through this stressful time. Danielle still visits the staff of FMF.

Tisha and her son

04Tisha and her son came to Families Moving Forward after relocating from Illinois. Tisha had stayed with family for a few weeks and then entered the shelter. While here, she received assistance in finding childcare, employment and housing. Tisha was accepted into a transitional housing program in south Minneapolis. She visits FMF during the monthly Alumni Dinners and is doing very well.

Tina and Her Son

05Trina came to Families Moving Forward after a long history of being in and out of emergency shelters. Trina had difficulty finding a job and keeping it. The FMF Social Worker worked with Trina on job assistance programs and helped her find a transitional housing program that would continue to support her in gaining new skills.

Charlie and His Daughter

06Charlie entered Families Moving Forward with his daughter. He had recently ended their lease after losing his job. Charlie worked hard during his stay to find employment and after 57 days he did. Charlie and his daughter moved into their new apartment this spring.

Michael and Janet

07Michael and Janet came to Families Moving Forward after Janet lost her job and the family could no longer afford the rent, although Michael was still working. Michael and Janet were also having difficulty with their son's education and they were given assistance with his school's special education program. The family moved into a transitional housing program after being with FMF for 73 days.

Tony and His Family

08Tony entered Families Moving Forward with his mom and two brothers after his family stayed with his aunt for several months. Tony's mom had difficulty making enough money to pay the rent, even though she was working during her stay. Tony and his family moved into a transitional housing program in St. Paul. Tony recently finished his first year of Headstart.

Sandra and her Three Children

09Sandra and her three children entered Families Moving Forward after not being able to pay the rent on their apartment. Sandra was eight and a half months pregnant. After going two weeks beyond her due date, Sandra gave birth to a health baby boy while in the shelter. Shortly after, Sandra found an apartment she could afford for her whole family. She still comes in to see the staff and get assistance.
